Hear Congressman Markey tell 5 oil execs the FREE RIDE IS OVER
deborahspoliticalpages.yolasite.com/statements-from-the-green-side.php
First mention
Congressman Ed Markey to 5 Oil Execs: "The FREE RIDE is over. Oil companies need to pay their fare share to drill on public land. Right now, everyone single one of the companies here today and dozens of other are DRILLING FOR FREE in the Gulf of Mexico on leases that will cost the American tax payers more than $50,000,000,000 in lost royalties."
Second mention
BP hold 37 leases in the Gulf of Mexico on which it drills for free,
Exon Mobil has 14,
Chevron has 51,
Shell has 28 and Connico Phillips has 10.
Between you all that makes 120 leases on which you pay zero, not a penny in royalties to the American people or to the people of the Gulf for the right to drill for oil and reap billions upon billions of dollars in profits.
Yet, when you're asked, "Can you stop the massive quantities of oil that are now ruining the beaches and marshland, killing the wildlife and devastating the economy?" you say "No".
You say you are "not well equipped to deal with it," and these catastrophic impacts are "simply unavoidable".
That is unacceptable to the people in the Gulf of Mexico. It is unacceptable to the people of our country. For years you've gotten a free ride on some of your offshore drilling, which amount to $50,000,000,000 in royalties not paid over the lifetime of these leases.
At the same time when your free ride results in a major disaster, what we have seen today is the collective answer that we cannot effectively deal with the consequences of a geyser coming from the bottom of the ocean.
It is an embarrassment that your response plans are about seals and walruses, and contain lond disconnected phone numbers for long deceased experts. It is an embarrassment that of your billions of dollars you have spent less that one tenth of one percent (<0.1%) on the development of safer technologies.
